The Dinners My Kids Like Best

get picky kids to eat healthy

Have you ever wondered what my kids think of the recipes on my blog? It’s all well and good if I like them, but do my kids actually eat them?

Earlier this week, I handed each of my kids a list of the recipes I’ve posted so far, and asked them to mark the three dinners they like best.  I expected their responses to vary widely, but two recipes easily tied for first place:

Chicken Broccoli Parmesan dinner picky eaters

Chicken Broccoli Parmesan earned one of those top scores, and it was my older son’s first choice.  I asked what he liked about it, and he replied, “Chicken.”  Okaaay, what else?  “Broccoli.”  When I encouraged him to give a response that was more than one word long, he simply said, “It tastes good.”  All right, I’ll accept that.

chili with beans and corn

The other winner was this protein-packed chili.  My younger daughter said she liked all the dinner recipes on the list, but The Easiest Chili Ever is her favorite because of the “yummy sauce and ingredients like corn and beans.  I don’t like tomatoes, but the other things cover them up.”  She said she also likes chili because I serve sweet cornbread with it.

chicken and sweet potato curry

Basil Chicken Curry made three of the four lists, and it was my youngest child’s top pick.  When I asked what he liked most about it, he said, “Everything.”  Apparently, both of my sons are men of few words when it comes to food.

The Real Reason My Kids Love These Dinners

Why did these recipes win top honors?  Honestly, I think the main reason is that I’ve been making these three dishes longer than anything else on my blog (except for Pumpkin Cookies, which were the top dessert choice).  That gives me hope that if I keep serving other things my kids aren’t fans of yet, they’ll learn to like those foods too.

Which brings me to my own favorite dinner recipe . . .

tortilla soup dinner

I’ve only been making this soup for a year, so it hasn’t made it onto the favorite-dinner podium for my kids yet, but I couldn’t resist including it after this interchange with my daughters yesterday:

Me: What should I make for dinner tonight?

Older Daughter: How about Tortilla Soup?

Me:  Sounds good.  I’ll make that.

Younger Daughter: Yay!!!

That’s good to know. I should do a similar survey with my kids, I wonder what they’d say?
