Fall is my favorite season, but this year I’m finding it hard to let go of some of the perks of summer–long sunny days, fresh tomatoes in our garden, and lots of ripe berries calling my name at the grocery store.
Maybe that’s why I’ve been making this delicious blueberry smoothie so often lately–it somehow manages to bridge both of those seasons. It has lots of blueberries in all their summery glory, but also a dash of cinnamon hinting at cozy comfort foods and fun holidays peeking around the corner. It’s also wonderfully satisfying, like drinking a rich blueberry milkshake that happens to be really good for you.
Of course, you can make this smoothie any time of year using frozen blueberries, but one of the fun things about using fresh berries is that you never quite know what the end result will be like. Barely-ripe berries will yield a tangy smoothie, while riper berries produce a mellower one. I suppose I could just pop a berry in my mouth before I blend and find out the answer right away, but that would be kind of like opening Christmas presents a week early. I’d rather wait and be surprised. 🙂
If you do opt for frozen blueberries make sure to use a fresh banana instead of a frozen one, or else your smoothie will be so thick you’ll need to eat it with a spoon. Which could actually be kind of fun on a warm, end-of-summer sort of day. Maybe I’ll try that this afternoon…
